Press release - 18th December 2012

Phoenix boosts film making in Leicestershire

New partnership will stimulate growth in local film industry

Phoenix Cinema and Art Centre is working with a group of over 100 local film producers, directors, scriptwriters and actors to support the growth of the region’s vibrant filmmaking community and stimulate movie-making in Leicestershire.

Phoenix is providing Seven / Five Productions – a local organisation founded in 2009 - with the facilities and exhibition opportunities it needs to operate its business, hold regular networking forums and screen films.

This will enable the two organisations to bring together and support individuals looking for a practical way to increase their filmmaking abilities and learn vital industry skills, across every aspect of film production. Phoenix will be able to draw on the experience and talents of the group to provide educational workshops to suit all skill levels. As a result, the partnership will enable people to network with other filmmakers, develop skills and partnerships, and get their films made.

Seven / Five members already have one feature film – Father to Fall – due for release in early 2013, and a second, The Fort, currently being shot in Leicester and Dover. The two films are expected to be screened at festivals worldwide, with the ultimate goal of securing international distribution deals. The group meets at Phoenix every Wednesday and is open to both experienced and new filmmakers alike. More information is at www.seven-five.co.uk

“At Phoenix, our aim is not just to show great films, but also to create the environment necessary for great films to be made,” said John Rance, CEO of Phoenix Cinema and Art Centre. “Seven / Five has established itself as a fantastic creative forum and working together we can develop the skills, and stimulate the ambition and opportunities success is built upon.”

Phoenix also hosts The Short Cinema, a biannual event which screens short films produced in the region. “New technologies are breaking down the barriers and making filmmaking much more accessible. You don’t need a Hollywood budget to produce high quality, informative and entertaining films.” commented Rance. “You simply need to develop talent locally.”
