Evelyn Waugh Film

Brideshead Revisited + intro

Wed 20 Jan, 7.30pm

Screening in partnership with 'The Complete Works of Evelyn Waugh' project based at the University of Leicester, this screening of 'Brideshead Revisited' commemorates the 50th anniversary of Waugh's death. The film will be introduced by Rebecca L. Moore, looking at the influence film had on Waugh’s work.

An evocative story of forbidden love and the loss of innocence based on the 1945 novel of the same name by Evelyn Waugh. Set pre-WWII, Oxford student and aspiring artist Charles Ryder (Matthew Goode) becomes entranced with the noble Marchmain family, first through the charming and provocative Sebastian Flyte (Ben Whishaw), and then his sophisticated sister, Julia (Hayley Atwell).
The rise and fall of Charles' infatuations reflect the decline of a decadent era in England between the wars.

Dr. Barbara J. Cooke on the project: 'The Complete Works of Evelyn Waugh' project is based at the University of Leicester and is working to publish all Waugh's writings, including letters and diaries, in one definitive edition. We're running a large number of events in 2016 to mark the 50th anniversary of Waugh's death, and are delighted to kick off this year of commemoration at Phoenix."
