Pema Tseden’s beguiling third feature is a treat for those who consider themselves arthouse cinema lovers.

Accustomed to a slow life tending his sheep on the Tibetan steppes, Tharlo is commanded by his local police chief to visit the nearest city and get an ID card. Told to get his hair washed by the photographer, a meeting with a much younger hairdresser throws Tharlo’s previous life into doubt.

Can he return to his quiet existence in the hills or will he now pine for the city and modernity?

A gently amusing, measured film, beautifully shot in black and white.
