From redesigning the garden to writing the weekly email to 6,000 customers, there was never a dull moment working in marketing at Phoenix cinema and art centre in Leicester.
As a 2nd year De Montfort University student, I was given the opportunity to gain nine months paid part time marketing experience in a professional environment, alongside my studies.
During this time I learnt new skills and gained invaluable experience across a wide range of marketing activities. I feel confident I’ve much improved my chances of securing a job after I graduate next year.
Like most students, I was aware there is intense competition for graduate jobs and a good qualification is only half of the battle. As a Psychology student wanting to go into marketing, it was even more important I find good quality work experience to support my future job applications.
I found out about the DMU Frontrunner scheme on the university’s website, which allowed me to apply for marketing positions both at DMU and at selected organisations in the Leicestershire area. I was invited to interview at Phoenix, and over the moon to be offered the position later that day!
The job at Phoenix has been a steep learning curve, but I’ve enjoyed every moment. During my placement I participated in and led team meetings, produced widely-publicised marketing materials, and wrote for the weekly email, brochure and new website. I also worked on digital marketing using social media, Google Ad Words and search engine optimisation.
One of my favourite jobs at Phoenix was events management, where I was responsible for planning, implementing and running several projects.
One of these was to re-design and refurbish the Phoenix Café Bar garden for use over the summer months. From start to finish I had the job of researching sponsors and suppliers, feeding back to the management team and making sure everything ran smoothly. As a result of this work, Phoenix was recognised by the Royal Horticulture Society in their 2014 ‘Britain in Bloom’ awards – something I am very proud of.
The whole experience of being a DMU Frontrunner at Phoenix has been hugely rewarding – it was a great way to earn much needed funds alongside gaining valuable on-the-job experience. I am very grateful for the opportunities I have been given.
