Rebellion Film Festival addresses theme of rebellion with five iconic movies from the last 50 years
Leicester’s independent cinema Phoenix is offering film lovers the chance to catch five classic movies on the big screen in its Rebellion Film Festival, taking place from Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 April.
From counterculture bikers in Easy Rider to teenage rebellion in The Breakfast Club, the films have been programmed by Phoenix in partnership with film students at DMU to address the theme of ‘rebellion’.
The full line up of films is: Quadrophenia, Easy Rider, The Big Lebowski and a double bill of The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Tickets for the individual films cost £7.90 (£6.10 concessions, £5 students) and can be purchased on the door or in advance at phoenix.org.uk.
Pitting Mods against Rockers in 1960’s Brighton, Quadrophenia kicks things off on Thursday 16 Apr at 7.30pm, introduced by Stephen Glynn, a writer on rock movies and author of a recent book about the film.
Dennis Hopper’s counterculture classic Easy Rider follows on Friday 17 Apr at 8.30pm; the story of two Harley-riding hippies on a road trip across America.
Tales of 80’s teenage rebellion are on the menu on Saturday 18 Apr at 3pm with a double bill of John Hughes’ classics The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Double bill tickets are just £12 and include a breakfast cob! (Single tickets also available.)
The festival rounds off with a chance to turn on, tune in and drop out with ‘The Dude’ in the Coen Brothers’ cult classic The Big Lebowski on Sunday 19 Apr at 12pm.
The festival also includes individual film screenings for schools and Leicester’s film making community:
For schools, We Are The Best screens at Phoenix on Thursday 16 Apr at 10am; the story of three girls who form a punk band to deal with the awkwardness of adolescence.
On Wednesday 15 Apr at 7.30pm, members of the filmmaking group Seven/Five Production will get the chance to watch Ed Wood, the story of a troubled filmmaker rebelling against the system.
