Phoenix cinema in Leicester is teaming up with University of Leicester’s arts centre Embrace Arts to mark the 90th birthday of legendary screen icon Richard Attenborough, hosting a season of six films chosen by his son, Michael Attenborough CBE who will also be presenting a one-off talk.
The season aims to showcase some of Richard’s greatest work as both an actor and a director, spanning his career including his breakthrough role in Brighton Rock, his chilling performance as serial killer John Christie in 10 Rillington Place and his moving C.S Lewis biopic Shadowlands. Richard spent his early years in Leicester and is a much-loved figure in the city. The season will offer both new and familiar audiences the rare opportunity to see his work on the big screen.
Michael will be delivering an exclusive talk as part of a range of activities offered by Phoenix and Embrace Arts on Saturday 17th August. Michael will be giving a personal insight into his father’s career, providing a fascinating and entertaining view behind the scenes of the films featured in the season. The talk will be followed by a screening of Brighton Rock.
Michael is a theatre director whose career includes directorial positions at London’s Almeida Theatre, the Young Vic and the RSC. He was appointed a CBE in 2013 for services to the theatre.
‘Richard is a very important figure in Leicester and in the film industry,’ said Phoenix CEO John Rance. ‘We are honoured to have his son Michael visit us. He has chosen a fine selection of films for our season and we are looking forward to him sharing his personal knowledge about them’.
Other events taking place at Embrace Arts on the 17th August include further talks on Richard’s love of art alongside a range of family-friendly activities, music and free creative workshops. Showing throughout the day is a specially commissioned film of interviews from local people about their relationship with Richard. There will be the opportunity for people to contribute their own memories to this unique digital record.
Michael’s talk is scheduled to take place at 2pm on Saturday 17th August. Tickets are available from Phoenix for the talk alone at £5 or as a package deal with Brighton Rock for £10. To book for any of the films, visit the Box Office, call 0116 242 2800 or visit www.phoenix.org.uk.
