On Wednesday 28 June Phoenix will screen Dispossession: The Great Housing Swindle, a feature documentary from director Paul Sng, narrated by Maxine Peake, that explores the catastrophic failures that have led to a chronic shortage of social housing in Britain — one of the biggest and most urgent crises facing the country today.
Dispossession investigates the neglect, demolition and regeneration of council estates across the UK and looks at how the State is working with private developers to demolish swathes of council housing and build new properties on that land that are unaffordable to the majority of people.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring the film’s director, Paul Sng; Dr Lisa McKenzie from the London School of Economics; Mark Grant, CEO of local charity Action Homeless; and housing campaigners Tim Morton and Tom Murtha (SHOUT: Social Housing Under Threat).
With the tragic events at Grenfell Tower just days ago, Paul Sng’s powerful documentary couldn’t be more relevant.
Dispossession: The Great Housing Swindle screens at Phoenix on Wednesday 28 June at 7pm.
