With the Oscars and BAFTAs just weeks away, Leicester’s independent cinema Phoenix is screening some of the hottest contenders in January and February – including The Theory of Everything, Birdman and Whiplash. Tickets for films at Phoenix start at just £6.10.
Eddie Redmayne is widely tipped for Best Actor for his astonishing portrayal of a young Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, running from 2 – 15 January, but could be pipped at the post by Michael Keaton whose starring role in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman (16 – 29 Jan) has earned him a Golden Globe Best Actor nomination.
J.K. Simmons delivers an electrifying performance as a volatile and brutal music teacher in Whiplash, screening at Phoenix from 16 – 29 January, while Paul Thomas Anderson’s comedy thriller Inherent Vice (30 Jan – 12 Feb) has already garnered a Best Actor nomination for Joaquin Phoenix.
Phoenix has shown some strong contenders already – including The Imitation Game, Mr Turner and Gone Girl – but there’s even more to look forward to in February.
Foxcatcher (6 – 23 Feb), has been wowing festival audiences and critics alike with stunning performances from Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo and Steve Carell.
The UK’s own David Oyelowo is a frontrunner for Best Actor in Martin Luther King biopic Selma (13 – 26 Feb), having already received a Golden Globe nomination, and Reece Witherspoon enters the Oscars race in Wild which tells the real-life story of Cheryl Strayed’s epic 1100-mile solo hike along the Pacific Crest Trail.
Also hitting the Phoenix screens in February is audience favourite Bradley Cooper in Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper, and crime drama A Most Violent Year, starring Jessica Chastain and David Oyelowo.
“January is always an incredibly busy month for us at Phoenix – the Oscars, BAFTAs and Golden Globe awards coincide with the release of many of the year’s best films,” said Jake Harvey, film programmer at Phoenix. “It’s a great time for new customers to come and enjoy the Phoenix experience – a friendly local cinema that shows the best in film all year round.”
Of course making predictions is an essential part of the fun, so Phoenix is encouraging customers to get involved and share their views on which movies deserve the film industry’s most coveted awards. Join the conversation on Twitter at #PhoenixVote or vote in the polls online at phoenix.org.uk.
