Phoenix Staff Favourite Film Soundtracks
Wed 26 Aug 2020
To celebrate our Sound on Screen season, we discuss some of our favourite film soundtracks.
Sound on Screen continues this week with director Q&As, a ’90s rave DJ set and talks organised with local partners and arts organisations, learn more here.

Ros Hill (Operations and Customer Services Manager) - Hannibal
Legendary composer Hans Zimmer’s glorious soundtrack was nominated for numerous awards, including Best Original Soundtrack at the 2001 World Soundtrack Awards.
Ros says:
Hans Zimmer’s beautiful music is set amongst such horrific content. It really builds the foreboding atmosphere and results in the film being even more haunting and memorable. It’s incredibly effective and has stayed with me.

Ricky Davis (Cinema Programme Assistant) - Ghost World
Ricky says:
Like the film itself, the soundtrack to Terry Zwigoff’s Ghost World is wonderfully eclectic and full of hidden gems. Straight from the opening credits, the music grabs the viewer’s attention with the joyous delirium of Mohammed Rafi’s Indian rock ‘n’ roll tune ‘Jaan Pechechaan Ho.’
Skipping between soulful blues, rebellious punk rock and childhood nostalgia, Ghost World offers something a little bit different. It’s a film that needs to be seen – and heard.

Laura Errington (Duty Manager) - Into the Wild
Laura says:
The soundtrack perfectly echoes the majestic scenery of Into the Film, and the soul searching of the main character during his solitary roaming of the expansive American wilderness.
Whilst the film ends in tragedy, the soundtrack is more introspective and hopeful, sung with Eddie Vedder’s soothing baritone and provoking a deep feeling of wanderlust. It’s the ideal to listen to at the beginning of a long journey.

Ethan Hargreaves (Café Bar, Box Office + FOH) - Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse
Ethan says:
Whether you’re interested in superheroes, hip-hop or trap music, it doesn’t matter – Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse is the perfect film and soundtrack combination for anyone.
Matching visually unique animation with a soundtrack so catchy you’ll be humming Post Malone’s vocal lines all the way home. The soundtracks charm is intoxicating and mirrors the loveable personality of Miles Morales; the new hip-hop loving, paint-spraying Spiderman!

Jake Harvey (Cinema Programme Manager) - The Last of the Mohicans
Jake says:
A gorgeous, sweeping, and epic soundtrack for a gorgeous and epic film.
The main theme is one of the most recognisable in movies, and the thrilling final chase sequence is set to “Promontory” – a driving, Scottish influenced song that makes you feel like you should be doing something – I’d rather be off running wild in the hills but it’s also a great soundtrack for doing deskwork I guess…

Tia Bradley (Digital Marketing Assistant) - The Great Gatsby
Tia says:
The beautiful blend of jazz, hip-hop, baroque pop and alternative rock in The Great Gatsby is genius. The mixing of genres and styles against the lavish backdrop of ’20s New York meshes perfectly and creates a decadent atmosphere.
There’s also a refreshing mix of older hits and new songs written specifically for the film. Two favourites are Lana Del Rey’s Young and Beautiful and Florence & The Machine’s Over the Love. Both original songs capture the heart of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s glorious love story flawlessly.
