There’s awards buzz in the air and independent cinema Phoenix Leicester has all the movies that matter on the road to this year’s Oscars with contenders for Best Motion Picture showcased throughout February.
Director David O. Russell could see his first Oscar win – after nominations last year for Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter – with 1970s crime caper American Hustle, screening from 14th – 27th February. Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, running from 17th January – 2nd February, could land Leonardo DiCaprio his first Oscar win for Best Actor.
12 Years a Slave, screening 31st January – 20th February, and Dallas Buyers Club screening 28th February to 13th March, have taken remarkable, real stories and brought them to life for the big screen.
Nebraska, screening 23rd – 26th February, looks at the father and son dynamic, while the Spike Jonze love story, Her, explores our growing dependence on technology and will run from March.
Captain Phillips and Philomena may have already been and gone but there is a welcome return of awards committee favourite, Gravity running from 28th February.
These blockbuster movies will complement the usual selection of independent, world cinema and stage productions regularly brought to the big screen at Phoenix Leicester.
