The Short Cinema film festival is in its tenth year and will run from Wed 24 – Sat 27 August.
The Midlands film festival will be celebrating a wealth of local talent when it puts on its biggest ever line-up of almost 50 short films from around the globe.
The festival, which has grown from a single evening to four days of screenings and events, reflects the importance of short filmmaking, which is often an avenue for up and coming filmmakers to showcase their talents and develop their careers.
It will start with a launch party, complete with red carpet, on Wed 24 Aug and culminate in the Main Competition on Sat 27 Aug, where films from across the Midlands will compete for a Best In Festival award, judged by a panel of industry judges.
Festival Director Alexzandra Jackson, says, “Short film is a powerful medium in its own right, a chance to tell a wide variety of stories that often couldn’t be told in any other way. It also gives established and emerging filmmakers a chance to share their work with audiences on the big screen, often for the first time.”
“We are proud, as a festival, to exhibit a brilliant selection of works not only from Midlands-makers but increasingly from around the world.”
This year’s programme has been expanded to include other attractions besides the main competition:
- the Shortish Cinema will showcase films that need a bit longer to tell their stories,
- the International Departures programme will feature the best submissions from around the world,
- a collaboration with the ICA Artist Moving Image Programme, Outside, will show how visual artists are using film to explore and innovate, and
- a programme of family-friendly animation, curated by Flatpack Film Festival.
