Phoenix independent cinema in Leicester is one of only seventeen cinemas nationwide taking part in the UK Green Film Festival. From Friday 6th to Sunday 8th June, film lovers will have the chance to enjoy three of the best environmental films from across the world for just £3 per ticket:
Musicwood + acoustic gig
Friday 6th June, 6.15pm
Musicwood is an adventure-filled journey, a political thriller with music at its heart. An unusual band of the most famous guitar-makers in the world (Bob Taylor of Taylor guitars, Chris Martin of Martin Guitars and Dave Berryman of Gibson Guitars) travel together into the heart of one of the most primeval rainforests on the planet. Their mission: to negotiate with Native American loggers and change the way this forest is logged before it’s too late for acoustic guitars. We are very pleased that local guitarists Steve Hicks and Lynn Goulbourn will be giving us a taste of beautiful guitar music with a set before the film.
Expedition to the End of the world
Saturday 7th June, 6pm
Introduced by Dr. Max Moorkamp from The University of Leicester. A three-mast schooner packed to the gills with a motley crew of artists, scientists and explorers with ambitions worthy of Noah or Columbus, sets sail for the end of the world: the rapidly melting massifs of North-East Greenland. Along the way the brave sailors encounter polar bears, Stone Age playgrounds and entirely new species, whilst confronting the existential questions of life. A raucous documentary brought to life by the oddball crew – all grown-ups who have steadfastly refused to lose their wide-eyed childlike wonder with the natural world.
The Last Catch
Sunday 8th June, 2.30pm
Director’s Markus CM Schmidt’s compelling documentary (a UK premiere) explores the problematic issues of livelihood and sustainability surrounding the Bluefin tuna fishing trade. An industry on the brink of collapse with tuna now being fished during spawning season, the fishermen themselves also face extinction. Those who are unwilling to bend the law to secure licences to fish in plentiful Libyan waters are left to trawl the already overfished Mediterranean areas. A moving parable of hope, disillusionment and desperation
The UK Green festival, supported by Friends of the Earth, aims to educate and promote environmental issues to wider audiences through the use of film.
