This year, we also decided to get involved with World Autism Awareness Day (on Thursday 2nd April) by hosting a free screening of kids’ film The Boxtrolls in our autism-friendly environment. Alexzandra Jackson, Phoenix’s education manager, and Cassie Brummitt, marketing assistant, went along to the screening to see how visitors felt about it.
It was gratifying to see so many families at the screening and particularly to see children looking so comfortable in the auditorium, in many cases expressing themselves freely throughout the film and wandering in and out with their families. Cassie spoke to some attendees to find out their thoughts.
Jude and his mother said it was their first screening in an autism-friendly environment and were very enthusiastic about the experience. When asked about his favourite part, Jude said, “I liked it that I didn’t have to be quiet all the time. I always like talking during the film, it’s a lot more fun!”
