Learn how to get the most out of your film in the edit suite with this guide to the art of film editing, led by tutor Keith Allott.

Over the course of 5 weeks, you will look at the different types of editing techniques used by editors to evoke reactions from audiences – from the first steps of organising your workload and creating your film’s visual style, to colour grading and mastering your film to perfection.


NOTE: You'll be using Final Cut Pro (and possibly Premiere Pro too) throughout the course.


Course Breakdown:


Week 1 – An introduction to editing techniques


Week 2 – Organising your work structure and getting started


Week 3 – Creating a visual style, stylistic consistency, colour grading and basic audio mixing


(You will be given visual and audio material in this week to construct your own edit)


Week 4 – Basic special effects


Week 5 – Screening your work and discussing the edit choices you made


This course will be delivered in person at Phoenix.

ABOUT THE TUTOR


Keith Allott is an award-winning narrative, documentary and abstract filmmaker with his own production company, Badshoes Film. His work has screened at film festivals across the world since 1997 including BAFTA qualifying screenings at Aesthetica and Encounters. As a producer he works with young people to create their own films and has helped them to screen and win awards through Into Film, the British Youth Council and multiple festivals including the BFI and INDI’s. He currently teaches film production and theory at De Montfort University International College and is working on several short and feature length projects.
