After a sell-out one-day course on Harry Potter, we invite you to dive back into the wizarding world and take a closer look at one of the most successful film franchises of all time. We’ll consider themes and elements of the films – such as the films’ cast and crew, adaptation, British identity, and their legacy – and explore the films’ production history.

Basic knowledge of the Harry Potter films is required. This is a course for adults, so attendees must be age 18+.

Week 1:  History, overview, cast and crew
Who were the key figures involved in making the Harry Potter films? What impact did they have?

Week 2:  Harry Potter as a book-to-screen adaptation
How much influence did J.K. Rowling have? What changes were made between the books and the films, and why? Does faithfulness to the books matter?

Week 3:  Harry Potter: Britishness on screen?
How does Harry Potter depict British identity? What makes the films British? Are the Harry Potter films actually British?

Week 4:  The legacy of Harry Potter
How has Harry Potter impacted the film industry and popular culture? What’s happened to Harry Potter since Harry Potter?
