Director Francisco Márquez skilfully combines the political with the psychological in this pseudo-supernatural thriller about a young middle-class woman’s guilt over inaction and a teenager’s mysterious death.

Cecilia, a sociology teacher and single mother, has her reality shaken to the core after she turns away her housekeeper’s son, seeking refuge on a stormy night, only for the boy’s dead body to be found in the river the next day. Social unrest rocks the impoverished neighbourhood as the police are accused of hounding the boy, while Cecilia is haunted by her guilty conscience and perhaps something altogether more sinister as well.

Addressing injustice in contemporary Argentine society and pointedly challenging the continuing and secretive policy of forced disappearance in the country, A Common Crime is essential modern filmmaking at its finest.
