British Silent Film Festival
This year will be the 20th iteration of the British Silent Film Festival and it celebrates the centenary of the birth of Wiemar and Expressionist cinema in Germany and its global influence between 1919 and 1932, particularly on British cinema.
One of the foremost collections of Expressionist art outside of Germany is held at Leicester’s New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, and we’ll be screening some films at the museum to draw links between film and the other arts.
Festival highlights include Neil Brand presenting Laurel and Hardy; a programme of Victorian short films restored to their former breath-taking glory; early horror films including The Phantom of the Moulin Rouge; The Runaway Princess; and German comedy The Oyster Princess directed by Ernst Lubitsch.
