Princess Mononoke is a Ghibli classic, a stand-out film from an acclaimed film studio beloved around the world. Domestically, it broke Japan’s box office records in 1997 and won numerous awards. Today it holds cult status as one of director Hayao Miyazaki’s most celebrated works.

Set in the Muromachi period (1333 – 1573), Princess Mononoke‘s world is one of conflict, where rabid modernisation is wreaking havoc on the delicate balance of nature and the spiritual world. Beautifully brought to life in hand-drawn animation, the film is a story of man vs nature and a love letter to Japan’s rich history and cultural heritage.

Dir: Hayao Miyazaki
Japan/USA, 1997
Subtitled, runtime 1hr 58mins
