In this tale of loss and intergenerational tension, a father sets out on a difficult journey to bury the body of his eldest son, Nazim – the latest casualty of the war with Russia. Accompanied by his other son, Alim, Mustafa embarks on a road-trip from Kyiv, determined to give Nazim a traditional Muslim burial beside his mother’s grave in Crimea.
As they travel the generational gap between college-educated Alim and his father grows more and more obvious. However, one commonality unites them – their shared language of Crimean Tatar. Along the way, they face many obstacles, not least of which is a decomposing cadaver, and Alim is hard-pressed to accept his father’s determination to uphold tradition at all costs.
Premiering at the Cannes Festival in 2019, this powerful and gripping Ukranian family drama from first-time director Nariman Aliev is now available in the UK through Modern Films.
