Having screened at Phoenix in July, Martin Eden is now available to stream as part of our Virtual Cinema programme.
Author Jack London’s (The Call of the Wild) 1909 novel – his most autobiographic work – is skilfully relocated to post-war Italy, and follows a young man struggling to find his place in the world and his voice as a writer.
Eden struggles to rise above his destitute, proletarian circumstances through his dogged pursuit of self-education, in the hope of achieving a place among the literary elite.
Shot on 16mm film and featuring a breakout performance from Luca Martinelli, Pietro Marcello’s drama is a stunning tour de force.
