'★★★★ - A five-set thriller of a film' - The Observer.
Following one of the greatest rivalries to grace the tennis court during the 1980’s, the clash of the icy Swede Bjorn Borg (Gudnason) and the fiery American John McEnroe (LaBeouf) made for TV and sporting gold.
But away from the cameras Janus Metz’s (Armadillo) film finds two men tormented by doubt and struggling to deal with the scrutiny their global fame brings.
A riveting account of the pain, sacrifice and determination it takes to be the best, Borg vs McEnroe also sees the return of Stellan Skarsgård to Swedish film after over a decade, playing Borg’s demanding coach Lennart Bergelin.
At the 7.45pm screening on Wed 4 Oct, Professor Martin Polley, Director of the International Centre for Sports History and Culture at De Montfort University, will give a brief introductory talk about the match and the rivalry between Borg and McEnroe, putting it into the context of the time. How did it fit into the history of tennis, and the history of Wimbledon? How were Borg and McEnroe presented by the media of the day? Professor Polley will explore these and other themes to help set the film's story in context.
