L'Hirondelle et la Mésange U

Sun 17 Sep, 5.30pm

This lyrical drama was shot in 1920 and not released into cinemas until 1983 when the original footage was re-edited by the brilliant Henri Colpi (Last Year at Marienbad).

A recent hit on the Festival circuit, the film was shot entirely on the waterways of Flanders and follows two barges, ‘The Swallow’ and ‘The Titmouse’ as they carry coal to the areas devastated by WWI.

Tensions arise between the captain and his pilot who lusts after his wife, but the star of the film is the beautifully lit and photographed French landscape, here accompanied by harp and piano from Elizabeth-Jane Baldry and Stephen Horne.
