As this is a Michael Haneke film (The White Ribbon, Funny Games, Amour) you’ll probably guess the title is an ironic joke.
Returning to a theme that has run through his earlier work, Happy End follows the trials of a bourgeoisie family in Calais and dissects their various troubles with icy humour.
Isabelle Huppert is on typically imperious form as Anne, in charge of her family’s estate trying to corrale her English lover Lawrence (Toby Jones), dementia-suffering father Georges (Trintignant) and deadbeat son Pierre.
