Sally Hawkins lights up the screen as celebrated Canadian artist Maud Lewis in Aisling Walsh’s deeply moving biopic.
Suffering from arthritis and living in remote Nova Scotia, Maud feels restricted by her uncaring family; so when local fisherman Everett (a terrifically gruff Ethan Hawke) puts an ad for a cleaner up in the local shop Maud jumps at the chance.
Struggling with Everett’s fiery temper and dealing with her own increasing frailty, Maud brightens up his draughty shack with paintings, which catch the eye of a visiting New Yorker.
As her work begins to cause a stir in the art world, will an incident from Maudie’s past ruin her new life?
A Phoenix favourite in such films as Happy-Go-Lucky and Blue Jasmine (and of course Paddington!), expect Sally Hawkins’ sublime work in Maudie to be recognised come awards season.
