Synopsis

**PLEASE NOTE - this event is now sold out.

In her book 'Victoria and Abdul, The True Story of the Queen’s Closest Confidant' author Shrabani Basu looks at the unusual friendship between Queen Victoria and her Indian servant, Abdul Karim, which caused a storm in the Royal Court.

Based on previously unseen private diaries and letters, her book revealed a hidden story that the Establishment tried to erase.

In partnership with Literary Leicester, Shrabani Basu joins us at Phoenix for a talk about the book and writing experience plus a post-film Q&A after a screening of the recent adaptation starring Judi Dench.

The new film from Leicester-born director Stephen Frears (The Queen, Philomena) stars Judi Dench as Queen Victoria, and is based on the extraordinary true story of her friendship with young Indian servant Abdul Karim. Sent to serve the Queen for her Golden Jubilee, young clerk Abdul strikes up an unlikely relationship with the Empress of India herself.
