Synopsis

★★★★ - Empire | ★★★★ - The Independent | ★★★★ - The Times

The latest film from Leicester-born director Stephen Frears (The Queen, Philomena) stars Judi Dench as Queen Victoria, and is based on the extraordinary true story of her friendship with young Indian servant Abdul Karim.

Sent to serve the Queen for her Golden Jubilee, young clerk Abdul strikes up an unlikely relationship with the Empress of India herself. As Abdul opens up a new world of culture to the aging Monarch the two grow closer and she begins to question the constraints of her long rule; but Abdul’s increasingly elevated position in her household causes jealousy amongst Victoria’s inner circle and the Royal family.

Based on the book by Shrabani Basu, Victoria & Abdul is a supremely enjoyable period drama with another masterful performance from Dench.
