★★★★★ – Flickering Myth

"Hauntingly evokes his identity as a dance alchemist who took the ace and exhilaration of the past and made it timeless" – Variety

"Fascinating portrait of the choreographer Alvin Ailey" – The Times

Director Jamila Wignot presents an immersive portrait of visionary choreographer Alvin Ailey. Born in Texas in 1931 to a teenage mother, Ailey founded his own dance company in 1958.

Told in his own words and through the creation of a new commission – entitled ‘Lazarus’ – inspired by his life, this fascinating new documentary profiles a brilliant and enigmatic man who, when confronted by a world that refused to embrace him, was determined to build one that would.
