Jack Lowden portrays the young Sassoon, as he is admitted to a war hospital for “shell-shock” upon his public dissidence from military service, by way of his 1917 poem ‘Soldier’s Declaration’. Here he became a friend and mentor to Wilfred Owen, a figure that would fascinate and haunt him throughout his life.

Although his poetry became acclaimed and he was adored by both the aristocracy and arts circles, a sense of failure tormented Sassoon, from his many relationships with men while closeted, and his eventual marriage to Hester Gatty (Kate Phillips). Peter Capaldi plays Sassoon in his older years, as he converts to catholicism and goes through a crisis of faith, denigrated by his adult son.

Siegfried yearned for connection throughout his life, and this eerie and painful drama illustrates this longing with a sense of gentle melancholy. A heart wrenching watch leaving much to consider.
