Britain has a reputation for creating some of the funniest, smartest and most surreal comedy in the world. Join us for this 4-week course that looks at how British comedy has developed on the big screen, for home audiences and abroad.
While British comedy films are widely considered to be unique amongst their peers, the story of British comedy is perhaps more complex and fascinating than you’d think.
When people think of British comedy, it’s often a particular ‘brand’ of it that they have in mind – be it Python, Carry On or romantic comedies featuring Hugh Grant. Needless to say, while those are all component parts, there’s a lot more to British comedy on screen and we’ll explore a few of the usual nooks and discover some unusual crannies. Ooh, Matron.
Week 1: Farce majeure
Week 2: What a carry On…
Week 3: He’s not the Messiah…
Week 4: A very British romance
