Having had numerous request from customers, we’re pleased to bring you this brand new course that delves into the history and future of Japanese cinema.


Japan has a long cinematic history, with both world-renowned makers and indie rebels capturing a rich and complex culture on film. Join tutor Kenton Hall as he takes you on journey through that history, through well-known and lesser-known films, stars, writers and directors.


Course breakdown


Week 1:  From the past – how Japan’s unique theatre informed their cinema

Week 2:  Kurosawa and the international breakthrough

Week 3:  Anime and the rise of Studio Ghibli

Week 4:  Modern Japan, modern cinema


We aim to deliver this course in person at Phoenix in a COVID-safe environment. However, in the event that this is not possible due to further COVID-19 restrictions we will deliver the course online to ensure that it can still go ahead.
