“★★★★ – A towering turn from Will Smith… one of the year’s great screen performances” – The Times
"Will Smith smashes it as Venus and Serena Williams’s headstrong father" – Telegraph
★★★★ – Empire
★★★★ – Metro
Will Smith is on award-worthy form in this fun, inspirational and uplifting biopic of Richard Williams, the father of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams.
A tough father who believes passionately in his daughters’ ability, Richard is determined to take them from the broken-down abandoned tennis courts of Compton to the highest level of world tennis. Battling snobbery and racism from the overwhelmingly white tennis community, Richard pushes forward with his unconventional methods, insisting the girls train rain or shine in order to achieve their potential.
Expect Smith to feature prominently in the awards conversation next year: the supporting cast sees Aunjanue Ellis (If Beale Street Could Talk) as the girl’s level-headed mother and Jon Bernthal (Ford vs Ferrari) as their coach dealing with Richard’s exasperating demands, while Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton deliver winning, utterly charming performances as Venus and Serena.
