Martin Eden 15

Mon 2 – Thu 5 Aug

"The film is a masterpiece, so you should see it any way you can" – Vulture

“Spellbinding. One of the best films of the last decade” – Sight & Sound

“★★★★ – a cinematic knockout” – Rolling Stone

★★★★ – Guardian | ★★★★ – Little White Lies

Skilfully relocating Jack London's most autobiographical novel to Italy, Martin Eden follows a young man struggling to find his place in the world and his voice as a writer.

When sailor Martin Eden saves a young boy from a beating at the docks, he is invited into his bourgeois home as a gesture of thanks. There he falls for the boy's sister, Elena, and is inspired to become a writer, setting him on a journey through an increasingly turbulent and tumultuous world.

Featuring a powerful breakout performance from Luca Martinelli at it’s centre - compared favourably to a young Robert De Niro by critics - and shot on 16mm film, Pietro Marcello's drama is a stunning tour de force.

In Italian with English subtitles.

Dir: Pietro Marcello

Cast: Carlo Cecchi, Luca Marinelli, Jessica Cressy
