Musical Film 18

Sat 25 Jan, 10.30am – 4pm

The golden era of Hollywood filmmaking had one genre that stood out from the rest – musical film.

In this one-day course we’ll explore the history of the genre and the typical conventions of musical film, taking a look at the work of Busby Berkeley and early black and white musical films such as The Jazz Singer.

We’ll also look at some of Hollywood musical legend Gene Kelly’s films (four of which are screening in our Gene Kelly Christmas season in December), before considering how musicals have developed in the modern era with the likes of  the Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar! and the multi award-winning La La Land.
