Prayers for the Stolen crosses the genre of the coming-of-age film with social realism, providing a somber narrative of war, trafficking and the families that deal with the consequences.
Against a backdrop of resplendent highlands in Mexico, three girls grow up playing in the houses of people who have disappeared. Their Mothers crop their flowing hair into boyish styles, telling them it’s to prevent head lice, as they grow older they will learn it’s an attempt to conceal their gender in order to repel a much deadlier threat.
Loosely based on the book of the same name by Jennifer Clements, this was Mexico’s entry for Best International Feature at this year’s Oscars.
