"Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes Crackle in quiet drama about the stubbornness of history" – Indiewire
“This bittersweet tale of the unearthing of the Sutton Hoo treasures on the eve of the second world war has gentle charm to spare” - Mark Kermode
★★★★ – Independent
Suffolk, 1939, and landowner Edith (Carey Mulligan) enlists the help of local self-taught archaeologist Basil (Ralph Fiennes) to explore the burial mounds at her estate.
Becoming convinced that the site is of incredible historical significance, Basil and Edith must deal with the government and prominent academics trying to take over the dig.
This elegant historical drama comes from the writer of Viceroy’s House and Jane Eyre, and is a hymn to the preservation of lost history even in the face of imminent and uncaring destruction of war.
