Fernando Meirelles (The Constant Gardener, City of God) returns with this superb new film, inspired by real-life events featuring acting heavyweights Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce on top form as the titular two popes.
Frustrated by the direction of the Church and still haunted by his experiences during the Argentinean Dirty War, liberal Cardinal Bergoglio requests permission from the Vatican to retire. Surprised to find himself summoned to Rome by the conservative Pope Benedict, these two men must find common ground amongst their differing views in order to decide the future of their institution in a time of political and social upheaval.
