Isak is travelling from Stockholm to Lund to receive an honorary degree from his alma mater with his daughter-in-law Marianne, unhappy with her marriage, pregnancy and company on this journey.

Along the way they pick up several hitch-hikers, each sparking a memory for Isak, causing him to reflect on his past. A beautiful juxtaposition of the rose-tinted glasses of memory against reality that has faded and been re-written over time.

The iconic imagery and benevolent story-telling earned Bergman reverence for his 1957 masterpiece, receiving a plethora of awards and is widely regarded as his greatest work.
