Over the skies of Berlin, two angels – Damiel and Cassiel – observe the humans below, shining rays of hope over those in distress. One longs to experience the physical world, while the other is uncertain of life outside their heavenly realm. As they continue watching and listening to the city’s thoughts, lifting their spirits in dark times, Damiel notices a deeply lonely woman.
Marion is a trapeze artist, residing in a caravan in West Berlin plagued by a painful loneliness. Her sorrow deepens as she finds the group she performs with are disbanding. Damiel has been watching and falls in love with Marion.
Frustrated that he can’t appear to Marion, Damiel longs to have a physical presence in the world he has only been able to look and listen to and considers shedding his immortality to be with her.
