“★★★★ – Rhythmic, palpably exciting stuff” – Little White Lies
“★★★★ – Very strange but true sports history” – The Guardian
“Colourful, thoughtful cinematic essay on a legendary volleyball team” – Variety
A crowd-pleasing, consistently entertaining delight, Witches of the Orient follows a team of female factory workers from post-war Japan who were transformed into an unstoppable volleyball team in the 1960s.
Using archive footage and hilariously frank interviews with surviving team members, cut alongside excerpts from a anime animation "Attack No 1" that was inspired by their exploits, we learn the truth about this legendarily ruthless team.
The 6.30pm screening on Wed 28 Jul will be followed by a 30 minute recorded conversation hosted by Edith Bowman, with director Julien Faraut, Paul Gravett (writer/curator/comics expert) and Maria Bertelli (England volleyball player at London 2012 and England volleyball coach).
