Tutor Moninder Gainda leads this 4-week voyage of discovery into the golden age of Bollywood. You’ll look at influential films, directors and stars from one of the world’s biggest cinema industries, and consider how these films foster a deeper understanding of India’s culture and society.


Week 1: An Introduction to the Golden Age of Bollywood
An introduction to the five key films that will feature across the course: Mother India, Anarkali, Dosti, Pakeezah, and Awara.


Weeks 2-3: Social Issues in Bollywood Films

A look at how social issues are represented in the films, considering the films' styles and the importance of the songs, music and the stars in them.


Week 4 – Bollywood Beyond the Golden Age

Exploring other pioneering films of the golden age, and the changing nature of Bollywood.

This 4-week course will run at Phoenix on Wednesdays, from 12 June – 3 July 2024, 2pm – 3.30pm.

ABOUT THE TUTOR


Moninder Gainda MA has a decades-long interest in film, and was introduced to the world of Indian cinema from a young age – from mainstream Bollywood movies to independent work by auteurs such as Satyajit Ray. As a screenwriter and filmmaker, Moninder has made a number of short films and is working towards making her first feature.
