Film Certification

Films are rated U, PG, 12A, 15 and 18, based on the BBFC’s guidelines. If a film is labelled TBC, its rating is to be confirmed and we must sell it as an 18 until it is classified.

Films are rated U, PG, 12A, 15 and 18. These classification are based on the BBFC’s published and regularly updated guidelines. If a film is labelled TBC, its rating is to be confirmed and we must sell it as an 18 until it is classified.

Whilst ratings are aligned to age, please be aware that films rated as suitable for young people can contain material which people of any age might find unpleasant. If in doubt, visit www.bbfc.co.uk to understand the certifications in more detail or talk to a member of Phoenix staff.

We reserve the right to refuse film admission to anyone who is unable to provide proof of age upon request. We accept any photographic ID displaying date of birth.

NOTE: Where a film has no BBFC certification, it can only be screened to over 18s. This is sometimes the case with world cinema or festival films, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that these films have adult content.

A U film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. Not all U films are aimed at children, but may be rated U because they contain no material likely to offend or harm. Legally a child of any age may watch a U film. Read more

PG films are suitable for general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for younger children. A PG film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older. Legally a child of any age may view a PG film. Read more
