Knighthood for Phoenix chair in 2018 New Year Honours

Phoenix cinema and art centre in Leicester is delighted to congratulate its chairman Alan Tuckett who has been recognised with a Knighthood in the New Year Honours for his services to developing lifelong adult learning in the UK and worldwide.

A Leicester resident, Sir Alan Tuckett has been a Phoenix Trustee and its Chair since August 2014.

During his career spanning over 40 years, Sir Alan has been an advisor and an advocate of adult learning to the UK and other governments, and organisations including the BBC, the EU and UNESCO.

“It’s wonderful news to see that Alan’s lifelong commitment to adult learning recognised at the highest level,” said John Rance, Chief Executive Officer of Phoenix. “Alan believes passionately in the power of cinema and art to enrich the lives of people of all ages, and we are extremely fortunate to have him as our chairman.”

Alan was awarded the OBE in 1995, has honorary doctorates from eight universities, and Fellowship of City and Guilds, the College of Teachers and UNESCO’s Institute of Lifelong Learning. He is a Professor of Education at Wolverhampton University.

Between 1988-2011, Alan was Chief Executive of the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE), where he started Adult Learner’s Week, an annual festival which spread to 55 countries. Between 2011-2015, he was President of the International Council for Adult Education
