Gowati

16 Jun - 23 Jul 2012
An inspiring multi-screen installation that re-imagines classical Indian performance for the digital age. Part of An Indian Summer 2012

Ramakant and Umakant Gundecha, better known as the Gundecha Brothers, are renowned for performing dhrupad, an ancient form of temple music and one of India’s most important classical traditions.

Dhrupad is celebrated for its purity and deep spirituality, involving highly complex mathematical calculations sung to both contemporary prose and sacred texts.

The Gundecha Brothers learnt their art from the legendary Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar, a musician with a lineage that can be traced back as far as 21 generations.

For Gowati, the brothers chose an extraordinary Raag, or composition, especially for the piece. Recorded with the latest technology, the piece will be presented on six separate screens in the Cube Gallery.
