“I met Death today. We are playing chess.”
From legendary filmmaker Ingmar Bergman comes this dark and the bizarre masterpiece – a must-see for world cinema fans.
A disillusioned Swedish knight returns home from the Crusades. Wandering the land seeking answers to life's big questions, he finds himself playing chess against the Grim Reaper during the Black Death.
Continuing the theme, we’ll have chess boards in the Café Bar for anyone who fancies a game on the night. The film will be introduced by Laraine Porter, Reader in Cinema History at De Montfort University.
This screening is hosted in partnership with the 'Are We There Yet?' film festival, celebrating journeys in cinema, organised by DMU Film Studies students.
