The Short Cinema: Show & Tell

The Short Cinema: Show and Tell is a regular screening night at Phoenix where local filmmakers can get their work seen on the big screen by an audience of film lovers and fellow filmmakers.
Hosted by Phoenix and The Short Cinema, the event is an opportunity for the local filmmaking community to come together, share their work and talk about it in a friendly and open environment.
Filmmakers are invited to submit short films for the screening. It’s open to any experience level, and we’re aiming to show an exciting mix of local talent working in any style or genre.
Screening on 1st June 2023.

Submission Criteria

This event is primarily aimed at filmmakers living or working in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, but we also accept submissions from the wider East Midlands.
We recommend that submissions are no longer than 10 minutes (but you may submit films that are up to 15 minutes). We’re open to narrative and documentary film and animation. Please only make one submission per event.
Participants are strongly encouraged to attend the event. There is usually time for socialising before the screening, and we will be inviting filmmakers to join our host Daljinder in a short panel discussion after the screening.
Films will be selected by a panel including film programmers from The Short Cinema and Phoenix.
To help curate our events, each submitted film goes through a selection process with a panel. whilst we hope to screen as many films by local filmmakers as possible we are often restricted by running time. When selecting films the key things we think about are; whether there is a complete narrative, is it original, does it have a consistent tone, do the characters feel authentic, and is it ambitious? This is also an opportunity for our panel to raise any issues that we feel a film might have. We might sometimes choose to show films that we feel should be presented with a content warning. This will be made clear to the filmmakers before the event.
