A rare cinema screening of one of the greatest sports documentaries ever made, introduced by The Guardian's William Fotheringham with an audience Q&A after the screening.
A Sunday in Hell follows the 1976 edition of Paris-Roubaix, cycling's toughest one-day race, as riders led by Eddy Merckx take on the gruelling, cobble-strewn course across northern France.
The late Danish director Jorgen Leth's revolutionary film-making ideas capture the unique atmosphere of the race, using more than 20 cameras along the race route, as well as a footage shot from a helicopter – groundbreaking techniques that went on to become standard in high-level sports coverage.
William Fotheringham is the author of a behind-the-scenes book about the making of the film and will tell us the inside story of the film and the race. William has covered professional cycling for over 30 years. His many acclaimed books include biographies of Eddy Merckx and Tom Simpson, and he also worked with Bradley Wiggins on his autobiography, 'My Time'.
We will be showing the slightly longer Danish version of the film, with subtitles.
