Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power + panel discussion 18

Expanding on her celebrated 2020 lecture “Sex and Power: The Visual Language of Oppression”, filmmaker Nina Menkes presents a fascinating documentary examining the male gaze in cinema.

Using over 175 clips from well-known films including the work of Scorsese and Hitchcock to more recent blockbusters and cult-classics, Menkes illustrates how different aspects of filmmaking can influence an audience’s view of women.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion lead by DMU's Dr. Ellen Wright - Senior Lecturer in Cinema and Television History, featuring Dr. Sophie Swoffer – a performance artist and lecturer who has written extensively on the male gaze and BFI Network Talent Executive Alexzandra Jackson.
