We are excited to welcome cultural icon Don Letts to Phoenix for an extended Q&A, hosted by Dare to Diva founder Carol Leeming MBE, after a screening of documentary Rebel Dread which tells the story of his legendary career.
Letts’ reputation has been firmly established in both the film and music industry by a substantial body of work over five decades. He came to notoriety in the late ‘70s as the DJ that single-handedly turned a whole generation of punks onto reggae, and it was while working as a DJ that he made his first foray into filmmaking with The Punk Rock Movie. Letts’ directorial credits span music videos and documentaries covering the likes of Gil Scot-Heron, The Jam, Sun Ra, George Clinton and most recently Paul McCartney. His first feature film Dancehall Queen (co-directed by Rick Elgood) was shot on location in Jamaica 1997, and will be screening at Phoenix in October as part of our Black History Month programme.
Following the Rebel Dread screening and Q&A, why not head to The International for a DJ set from Don Letts himself – visit the-international.co.uk for more details.
Presented in partnership with Dare to Diva and Leicester’s International Arts Centre.
