Aki Kaurismäki’s bittersweet and gentle comedy follows lonely singletons Ansa (Alma Pöysti), fired from her job at a supermarket for trying to take home an out of date sandwich, and Holappa (Jussi Vatanen), a construction worker who struggles to stay sober long enough to finish a shift.  

From a chance meeting at a karaoke bar, Fallen Leaves charts these two lost souls as fate pulls them together through all manner of obstacles and small tragedies.

There’s a warm sense of humour in failure here, and the feeling that in spite of it all, there will always be reprieve from darkness.
