Fatherland 12A

★★★★★ – Guardian. Winning the Best Director award at this year’s Cannes film festival, Paweł Pawlikowski’s (Ida, Cold War) poetic new drama centres on the relationship between Nobel Prize-winning writer Thomas Mann (Zischler) and his daughter Erika (Hüller) – actress, writer and rally driver. In the summer of 1949, they embark on an emotional road trip in a black Buick across a Germany in ruins, from US dominated Frankfurt to Soviet controlled Weimar. After sixteen years of exile, Thomas returns to face not only a divided fatherland, but also a deep fracture within his own family.

In German with English subtitles.
